New Gmail Inbox

On August 15, Google released Inbox for Google Apps for Education. This new email application provides enhanced features for managing your email Inbox and mobile use. The UCSC Google Service team evaluated the service and enable it for our campus on August 19.

Inbox was built by the Gmail team to give you a new way to stay organized. Everything from Gmail (your emails, contacts, and labels) is available in Inbox. Gmail and Inbox stay in sync so what you do in one app carries over to the other. Gmail and Inbox have many of the same features, but there are differences. Watch Video

You will have access to both services, the new Inbox and your regular Gmail interface. You do not have to choose one or the other.

Key Features of Inbox

  • Improved Inbox management:
    • Mail is automatically bundled into categories like Promos, Social, Purchases, Trips, and Low Priority
    • Set a schedule for your bundles to display in your Inbox: immediately, once a day, or once a week
    • Pin important emails so they are easy to find
  • Take messages out of your inbox until a specified time or arrival at a specified place
  • Integrated Calendar reminders that can be tied to email messages
  • Save links (URLs) to your Inbox
  • Replies in email suggest common responses
  • Orders contain up to date tracking information
The new Inbox (for our UCSC domain) does not yet have the following features that the standard Gmail service does:
  • Contacts
  • Out of office reply
  • Advanced search options drop down menu
  • Ability to create filters
  • Canned responses
  • Labs
  • Offline
  • Configuring multiple accounts
  • Ability to tag a message or conversation with multiple labels
